Abstract
This seminar presents a paradigm shift in the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within industrial systems. Moving beyond large-scale, data-hungry models, we propose a framework of "Strategic Lightweight AI"—integrating efficient, domain-specific Small Language Models (SLMs) and Generative AI to create human-centric, explainable, and sustainable cyber-physical systems. Drawing directly from the research of Dr. Carman LEE’s team, we will demonstrate how this paradigm simultaneously solves operational bottleneck. The seminar examines the next frontier in industrial engineering: creating symbiotic systems where specialized, lightweight AI handles adaptive coordination and generative tasks, freeing human experts to focus on higher-level strategy, exception management, and ethical governance. This seminar will introduce Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and fine-tuning of a foundational LLM on TRIZ contradiction matrices and eco-design case studies. This creates a system that, given a design problem, deeply embedded in the domain context, working in partnership with human intelligence.
